Chemical Warning Labels save Lives

Chemical Warning Labels save Lives
Warning labels play a big role in keeping workers safe while handling or working around hazardous chemicals. But, it becomes more important for workers to know and understand chemical warning labels.

As required by OSHA, labels should be put in all chemical containers. The Hazard Communication Standard has compelled all chemical manufacturers and distributors to put warning labels and other vital safety information. The chemical labels in the containers are an important part of every employee’s right to know about the hazards associated and it is also another requirement of the Hazard Communication Standard.

Why the chemical labels are important is that they tell employees about:

The identification of the chemical in the container along with the name, address and contact number of the manufacturer or distributors.

Whether it is hazardous or not and if it is then why it is hazardous.

How to protect against hazards while storing and handling. It also gives the instructions, PPE and other emergency instructions.

The chemical manufacturers and distributors are also required by the Hazard Communication Standard to provide a material safety data sheet (MSDS) for every hazardous chemical product sold by them. Employers must keep an MSDS for every chemical on file in a workplace and it must be readily available for all employees who have direct or indirect contact with the substance. The MSDS provides a more comprehensive and detailed safety and health info than the labels and it should be used together with the warning labels.
